The Best KastKing Reels Reviews

I never actually fished without a reel until recently when mine broke at the beginning of a fishing trip. That's when I realized how essential reels are to modern fishing and how to get one; by reading the best KastKing reels reviews.

Why Get A KastKing Reel?

Why Get a KastKing Reel?

Fishing has been around for a long time and, for most of that time reels didn't exist. The only way to catch a fish with a rod and line was to yank them out of the water in one fell swoop when they bite. Some people still prefer to fish this way, especially the proponents of Tenkara fishing and other similar methods.

For the rest of us, a reel is a necessity which makes fishing that much easier and simpler. Before it was invented, you needed overwhelming strength to catch even some smaller fish, but now that is a thing of the past – anyone can troll for fish, even children. Moreover, larger fish that could previously only be caught with heavy duty nets can now easily be pulled up with a rod.

Modern reels are made of sturdy materials and are designed to make fishing as easy as possible, offering a host of helpful features to achieve that. With a push of a button, you can now perform tasks that needed immense skill or required a significant time investment.

KastKing is a relatively new, fast-growing company - their goal is to keep fishing fun for everyone, and they offer a broad range of quality products that are easy to use and are not too hard on your wallet. Their reels are among some of the best on the market.

Types Of Reels

There are more than a few different types of reels out there, each made for a different purpose. Knowing which reel does what is crucial in picking the right one for you. Here are some of the most popular types.

Sometimes called "push button" reels, this type is the easiest to use and well-suited for beginners while being cheaper than most other types. However, they also tend to be poorly made.

Probably the most popular type, spinning reels are placed on the bottom of the rod and offer a lot of versatility. They require more skill to use than spincasts but also allow for better control. They are well-suited for fishing in both saltwater and sweetwater.

One of the hardest types to use, baitcasting reels are the traditional choice for most anglers. They are very durable and ideal for hunting larger fish while offering a lot of control and accuracy to the user but are not for the inexperienced.

What You Need To Consider Before Getting A Reel

Types of Reels

There is a multitude of things to think about when choosing the right reel for you – here are some of the most important ones.

  • Gear Ratio – probably one of the most important aspects of a reel, it tells you how many rotations the spool makes per one turn of the handle. 5:1 would be five rotations per turn – the higher the first number, the faster the reel, but also less powerful. Larger ratios are better for smaller fish and smaller ratios for larger game.
  • Materials – you don't want a cheap reel made of plastic that will fall apart quickly, especially if you're going for larger fish. You also need to consider what each part of the reels is made of – the frame, the body, the spool, etc.
  • Size – this depends on a few things, but mostly the type of fish you’re going for. If you want to hunt larger game, you need a larger reel that can take in thicker line and has a large capacity. For smaller fish, you probably want the opposite.

There are other things to consider like the drag system or the braking system, but those are not as important as the basics of a reel.

best kastking reels assassin carbon

This is probably the lightest baitcasting reel I have ever used, coming in at only 5.7 ounces. Despite that, it is a highly durable piece of equipment while also being supremely corrosion resistant. It's made almost entirely of carbon fiber and aluminum.

It also offers a surprising amount of power – up to 16.5 pounds of drag, great for the size of all the models on offer, though some have different specs. The 11 ball bearings, also corrosion shielded, provide a really smooth drag too. In addition to that, the gear ratio of 6.3:1 fits perfectly with all the other specs making it great for reeling in smaller to medium fish.

Another great feature that I liked, just like in one of the other reels, is the magnetic brakes, which offer a lot of control and accuracy. The instant stop anti-reverse feature also helps with that.

Besides the magnetic brakes, this reel also has centrifugal brakes, and handling both at the same time might be a challenge for some – it was for me.

Otherwise, this reel has very few real downsides. It squeaks a bit at times and needs to be greased rather often, but that’s about it.

The largest sticking point, however, is the asking price. Since carbon fiber is a costly material, it makes sense that this product costs a lot, and it is a quality reel, but the price still might be a bit too steep for some - especially for a smaller reel like this.

  • Very lightweight construction
  • Supremely powerful for its size
  • Magnetic brakes
  • Instant stop anti-reverse feature
  • Made from durable materials

  • Expensive for what it offers
  • Needs to be greased up often
  • Squeaks at times

This reel boasts plenty of different and useful features, and first up is the gear ratio of a great 7.0:1, allowing for great speed in retrieving the line onto the spool. It’s also really lightweight, being made from aluminum and weighing in at a poultry 7.5 ounces. Despite that, it offers some pretty great drag strength, a total of 17.5 pounds of it – smooth as butter too. All of this makes it perfect for hunting small to medium fish in saltwater.

The magnetic brake system also helps a lot, and I found it to be an awesome addition – it saved me tons of fish that I otherwise would have lost. The best part is that all of this comes at an affordable price point.

However, this reel is not without its weak points, and there are a few. The fact that it's made of aluminum makes it unsuited for open saltwater fishing, and it's certainly not as durable as models made from tougher materials.

The other problem is that the gears on this reel go too fast at times, achieving a gear ratio greater than the indicated one of 7:1. This means that you might have some mishaps while hunting fish that are a bit larger since you won't have enough strength to pull them out. The other problem this creates is the backlash, which happens often.

Still, I’d say this reel is easily worth its price.

  • Great magnetic brake system
  • 7:1 gear ratio
  • Great drag strength – 17.5 ounces
  • Lightweight design and construction

  • Gears sometimes go too fast
  • Not durable or suited for saltwater
  • Sometimes you get backlash

What stood out about this reel when I first looked at it was the price point – it's cheap, even compared to similar models. That’s why I expected it to have a lot of flaws, but it surprised me.

The best thing about this reel is how light and durable it is considering the price and its power. It’s made almost entirely from graphite and has a very low weight while offering up to 20 pounds of drag power. This applies to all the various sizes the reel comes in. The gear ratio goes from 4.5:1 to 5.2:1 in different sized models, so it’s great for tackling some medium-sized sweetwater fish.

Another thing that surprised me was the smooth operation, probably owing to the nine ball bearings it has. It never hitched, even when tackling somewhat stronger fish.

It also just looks terrific.

The downsides I found are somewhat deal-breaking though. The biggest one was that a lot of fish got away while using this reel due to it constantly frees pooling. The drag was not holding, and it's a shame that this is the case.

There are some other minor problems, like backlash and the fact that it takes a long time to return it to the reel-in position, but that’s minor compared to that one big issue. If it weren't for that, I'd easily recommend it.

  • Extremely affordable price
  • Lightweight but more powerful than it seems
  • Portable
  • The drag is really smooth

  • Regularly free spools leading to lost catch
  • Takes a long time to return to the reel-in position

What makes this reel stand out amongst even other KastKing reels is how durable it is. This baitcasting reel is made mostly of hard anodized aluminum while having brass gears, a stainless steel shaft and being incredibly corrosion resistant, making it suited for saltwater. In addition, it has a rather strong drag system, coming up at 20 pounds of power.

Another great thing is the design – it’s supremely comfortable with nonslip EVA grips, a thumb bar spool release that’s easy to access and a line out clicker alarm.

It’s also really versatile as it can be used for fishing in various conditions and comes in plenty of different sizes, offering a gear ratio of 3.6:1 in all models, making it well suited for medium or larger fish.

So, what could be the problem with this one? Well, it's rather heavy for its size due to all the steel used in the construction, which might be difficult if you're used to lighter reels.

Another issue I found is that it holds a surprisingly low amount of line, so if you’re planning on casting very far or using it for deepwater fishing it might not be the best product for you. Otherwise, this isn’t much of a problem, but it certainly is worth considering.

All that said, I still really liked using this reel and would recommend it.

  • Extremely durable and corrosion resistant
  • Easy to use and comfortable
  • Offers plenty of power

  • It’s way too heavy for its size
  • Doesn’t hold a lot of lines

The look of this spinning reel is initially what caught my eye, as it seemed really slick and comfortable. However, the reason I put it in this roundup is more to do with its good performance.

It comes in various sizes, but all are suited for catching some huge fish. The gear ratio varies from 4.9:1 to 5.2:1, and the strength of the drag goes up to an impressive 41.5 pounds of drag power at the largest model! With the instant stop anti-reverse feature and its durable construction, this reel can really pack a punch. The power launch lip casting feature also ensures a smooth and comfortable casting experience.

It’s also rather lightweight for the size and even the largest model only comes up at about 16 ounces of weight, while the lighter ones clock up at only 7 ounces or so.

Despite all I listed, the prices for this reel are very affordable, especially compared to models of similar strength and quality.

What holds it down are a few little flaws that add up over time. For example, while most of it is corrosion resistant, the bolts and bearings are not, and this is not immediately obvious, so you might not even notice they're rusting before it's too late. Another issue is the fact that it’s noisy, potentially scaring away the fish. There’s also the fact that it can’t hold any really heavy line, despite being made for stronger fish. And so on.

Overall, it's still a good reel; it's just very flawed.

  • High strength of up to 41.5 pounds
  • Plenty of different sizes offering different specs
  • The power launch lip casting feature
  • The instant stop anti-reverse feature

  • Not all parts are corrosion free
  • The noise it makes might scare away fish
  • Doesn’t hold heavier line

The KastKing Reel I Use

While these are all quality products available at very fair prices, for me the winner is the priciest reel on offer here, the KastKing Assassin. Why you might ask? The answer is simple – it provides a lot for its size and is suited for most tasks while offering a lot of features that I like a lot – the magnetic brakes, for example. The others here just don't compare. Of course, it has its downsides and is not suited for catching larger fish, but I don't do that, so it's perfect for my needs.

When all is said and done, I hope my best KastKing Reels review helped you choose the best product you can get. Have a beautiful day, and good luck out there.
