What is a musky lure?

Various Types Of Muskie Lures

The musky lure is the man-made fishing bait used for attracting musky’s attention. Color, flash, movement, and vibration are its strongest suits. It usually comes with at least one hook, to catch a fish when it strikes.

There are different types of the lures with bucktails, glide baits, top waters and simple lures made of soft plastic, being the most common ones used in musky fishing. They all have their advantages and cons, but every one of them has its specific usage.

Bucktails are probably the most popular among the anglers and the majority of the lures we’ll be talking about today are part of this group.

The reason for their popularity is their versatility. They produce vibrations in the water, which can be easily detected by musky’s lateral line. Also, once you put a bucktail in, you can retrieve it at any speed. This feature is advantageous as you will realize when you take a look at our next section.

How to get the right musky lure?

Okay, you decided that you will dive into one of the most favorite sports in North America – musky and pike fishing. Well, you already know what are you getting yourself into, so you better buy the proper equipment. How to choose the right lures you ask? Listen to my advice, and you will be swimming in fish.

The size matters

This is a pretty simple rule – smaller baits are for small fish, big fish wants something bigger to bite too, so your lure will have to be a bit larger. Northern Muskies and pikes will go for 4-12 inch baits, but ones that are about 7 or 8 inches long are ideal.

How about the depth?

There is a correlation between depth and season we are in while we are fishing.

What season is it right now? Seriously, this is an important question.

Fish tend to search for food in different spots, depending on the season, so you’ll have to find the suitable lure for the depth you want to reach.

During the summer, fish will go to deeper water. As the fall or spring approach - comes the turn for shallow waters, so shallow running and surface lures would be the best.

Tangled in the weed

Fishing for musky, pike or largemouth bass, you’ll have to deal with lots of weeds. If you don’t want to buy another lure after every fishing session, make sure to find the ones with a weed guard.

Water temperature

When the lake, river or the ocean is cold, fish tend to decrease their activity, which means the best choice is having smaller lures combined with the slow presentation. For muskies and pikes, gliders and jerk baits should do the job as long as you make pauses between your retrieves.

On the other hand, warm water for fish means a faster metabolism and more feeding. During this time, different spinners and crank baits combined with fast retrieves will come in handy.

What about the color?

You’ll see there are lures in many different colors on the market and this is not for your fun, it is for fish. The general rule you should follow is to go with lighter colors when the water is clear and fluorescent colors if the water is stained. However, there are many different opinions on this topic, so it is probably the best for you to experiment on your own.

Finding the color that suits your game fish is more important than following some theory on which one you should use.

How to use the musky lure?

Using a musky lure is pretty simple and I suppose if you are on this page that you already went fishing more than few times in your life and you know how to use the basic equipment. So, I will skip the unnecessary explanations and let you watch the videos that will show you how to do it.

1. Lixada 8" Pike Muskie Fishing Lure – Durable and lifelike

Lixada 8" / 20cm 66g Lifelike Multi-jointed 8-segement Pike Muskie Fishing Lure Swimbait Crankbait Hard Bait Fish Treble Hook Tackle

Via Amazon.com

Lixada’s eight-inch bait for pike and musky fishing is incredibly realistic! If you decide to purchase it, you won’t spend too much money, and you will get multi-angled lure with two durable, treble hooks and 3D eyes. It is made of durable ABS materials, and it weighs 2.9 oz or 82 g.

The first time you put this lure to the action, you will be delighted with the smoothness of its swimming. Even when the sharp musky teeth grab it, it won’t break or damage; you will catch much fish before that happens. The hooks are razor sharp, so watch your fingers. I recommend you to take this lure in your hands and pay attention to the details; it looks as if it was alive.

However, it might be a little heavier than you would expect and you’ll have to reel it in really slowly. If not, it will just come up to the surface and do nothing. Another unfortunate thing is that you get only one lure in the package.82 g.

Things We Liked

  • The swim action is impeccable.
  • Fish teeth won’t damage it easily.
  • The hooks are razor sharp.
  • Colors and the details are extraordinary.
  • It is affordable.

Things We Didn't Like

  • It might be a little heavy.
  • You’ll have to reel it in slowly, or it will come up to the surface.
  • You get only one lure in the package.

2. Mepps Magnum Musky Killer Dressed Fishing Lure – Versatile and flashy

If you want the lure that runs in both deep and shallow water depending on the retrieve, Mepps Magnum Musky Killer is the right choice for you. It has a bold name, and it comes in bright colors with a solid brass blade that maximizes vibration and flash.

Remember that this company has a very good background; their bucktails and marabous were the America's favorite musky bucktail when the Musky Hunter magazine conducted the survey.

This lure comes with a heavy duty hook, which means it will last for a while before you need to purchase another one. It runs at least eight feet deep, and it is reliable. Bright colors of the lure are here to attract the predator. It is versatile and offers more than you could expect.

Still, you’ve probably noticed it is not very natural looking, so some of the smartest Muskies might learn how to avoid it. Also, it might be too big for some of the smaller ones. Even that the reputation of the company guarantees the quality, the lure is still a bit expensive.

Things We Liked

  • It runs as deep as eight feet.
  • It comes with a heavy duty hook.
  • It is reliable and does a great job.
  • It has bright colors to attract the fish.
  • It offers the performance and versatility of both shallow-water and deep-running lure.

Things We Didn't Like

  • It’s not natural looking.
  • It’s too big.
  • It is a bit expensive.

3. Mizugiwa 8" Pike Musky Dawg Fishing Soft Bait Lure – Colorful but fragile

Mizugiwa 8"/20cm 45g Pike Musky Dawg Fishing Soft Bait Lure Zabder Freshwater Curly Shad Tackle Bull Coarse Pack of 4

Via Amazon.com

If you aim to save some money and get a lot of lures at the same time, Mizugiwa is the right fishing brand for you. If you purchase their product, you will get four lures of different colors, made of soft plastic, with razor sharp hooks. They are balanced with a jig head, so they swim down at a 45-degree angle and horizontal on the retrieve.

This is a highly affordable deal. Also, selection of the colors is exquisite; they are bright and shiny, so it is highly unlikely that they will pass unnoticed. The soft tail offers great twister action. Also, this is another case where you should watch out for your fingers because of the sharpness of the hooks.

However, once you catch a fish, you can say goodbye to your lure. This product is not durable at all, the tail gets chewed up quickly, while the eyes might come off even sooner than you expect. I guess it’s – you get what you pay for.

Things We Liked

  • You’ll get four different lures in the package.E
  • xtremely affordable.
  • It has a great twister tail action.
  • Selection of colors is exquisite.
  • Hooks are really, really sharp.

Things We Didn't Like

  • The tails get chewed up quickly.
  • This is not a durable product.
  • Eyes on the lure might come off sooner than you expect.

4. Haggerty Jointed Muskie Fishing Lures – Pricey and salt-resistant

Haggerty Jointed Muskie Fishing Lures – Pricey and salt-resistant

Via Amazon.com

Haggerty Jointed musky fishing lure is made specifically for fly fishing. That is the main reason why it consists of colorful feathers instead of plastic or any other material. If you purchase this 7-8 inch product, you will get a jointed fly that combines Marabou, Bucktail, and Flashabou on a sturdy black nickel hook with a fish skull mask on top.

What I liked about this product was his size and unusually bright colors with Whiting grizzly feathers which are here to attract any hungry fish looking for prey. In comparison to other lures in this group, this one was made for fly fishing, so that’s an option for you too. Another great feature is that it is salt-water resistant, so you can use it for trailing, trolling and teasing wherever you want.

Unfortunately, you will get only one lure in the package which makes it a little pricey. Also, you should be careful while using it because feathers might fall off before it even gets to Muskie's mouth.

Things We Liked

  • It is made for fly fishing.
  • It has a nice size.
  • It is brightly colored so that it can be easily spotted.
  • It can be used in salt water too.

Things We Didn't Like

  • You will get only one in the package.
  • It’s a bit pricey.
  • Feathers might fall off after the first use.

Conclusion

For me, this is a no-brainer. I love to experiment with the lures, so I had a chance to try every single one from this group, but I always make sure to have Lixada 8" Pike Muskie Fishing Lure on my hands.

The details and the swimming action of this one are what drives muskies crazy! Also, I don’t have to worry that it will fall apart while I’m on the water because it is super-durable. It comes in four different colors, which means I can choose the one that is the most suitable for the certain weather and water conditions. I really have no complaints about this product.

Whichever lure you choose, you won’t make a mistake; fish will be caught. However, with some of them, you will spend more money than you need to and some will fall apart sooner than you’d like to. Still, every single one of them will come in handy at some point of the fishing season, just make sure to buy more pieces of the one you like the most.

I wish you the largest musky ever! Good luck!
